District of Columbia home insurance questions

Does homeowners insurance cover flooding in District of Columbia?

No. Standard homeowners policies exclude flood, including storm surge. Flood coverage is a separate policy from the National Flood Insurance Program or a private flood insurer. Lenders require it for federally backed mortgages on homes in high-risk flood zones.

What is a windstorm or hurricane deductible?

Some policies, especially near the coast, apply a separate deductible to wind or named-storm damage. It is often a percentage of the dwelling coverage rather than a flat amount, so it can be much larger than the all-other-perils deductible. Your declarations page shows which applies.

What if I can’t find standard coverage?

A broker can approach surplus-lines carriers, which write risks standard carriers decline, and your state’s FAIR Plan where one exists, the insurer of last resort for basic property coverage. Coverage and consumer protections can differ from a standard policy, so compare carefully.

Is earthquake covered?

Not by a standard homeowners policy. Earthquake coverage is usually added by endorsement or bought as a separate policy, with its own deductible.

General information, not insurance or legal advice. Coverage depends on the policy and carrier. Risk ratings describe hazards, not whether a loss will happen or whether a home will qualify for coverage.
